About This Coffee
Charles Muthwiri's specialty Mukarimu Estate lot grows some of Kenya's finest coffees at more than 1,500 metres above sea level. The fertile, volcanic slopes of Mout Kenya and the Nyambene ranges are exalted as the Napa Valley of Africa, producing coffee fit for kings. This high-grade coffee was historically exported under British rule, and is now driving a reclaimed Kenyan specialty coffee industry.
Vava Coffee, the only female-led B Corp in all of Africa, is our coffee partner in Kenya. Vava uses coffee as a tool for sustainable development and empowerment to include more women and children in the supply chain of coffee at origin.
Their direct and Fairtrade model brings specialty grade coffees to roasters, consumers and importers who pay fair, premium prices. By directly linking smallholder coffee farmers like Charles Muthwiri to markets that are keen on ethically sourced, traceable coffees, this model provides sustainable livelihoods for these smallholder coffee farmers.
